Current applications of artificial intelligence for intraoperative decision support in surgery

Allison J. Navarrete-Welton, Daniel A. Hashimoto

Frontiers of Medicine 2020, Volume 14, Issue 4,   Pages 369-381 doi: 10.1007/s11684-020-0784-7

Abstract: Research into medical artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant advances in recent years, including surgical applications. This scoping review investigated AI-based decision support systems targeted at the intraoperative phase of surgery and found a wide range of technological approaches applied across several surgical specialties. Within the twenty-one ( =21) included papers, three main categories of motivations were identified for developing such technologies: (1) augmenting the information available to surgeons, (2) accelerating intraoperative pathology, and (3) recommending surgical steps. While many of the proposals hold promise for improving patient outcomes, important methodological shortcomings were observed in most of the reviewed papers that made it difficult to assess the clinical significance of the reported performance statistics. Despite limitations, the current state of this field suggests that a number of opportunities exist for future researchers and clinicians to work on AI for surgical decision support with exciting implications for improving surgical care.

Chen JIA, Fan SHI, Meng ZHAO, Shengyong CHEN

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 7,   Pages 1077-1097 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2100180

Abstract: Light field (LF) imaging has attracted attention because of its ability to solve problems. In this paper we briefly review the research progress in in recent years. For most factors that affect development, the richness and accuracy of visual information acquisition are decisive. LF imaging technology has made great contributions to because it uses cameras or s to record the position and direction information of light rays, acquiring complete three-dimensional (3D) scene information. LF imaging technology improves the accuracy of depth estimation, image segmentation, blending, fusion, and 3D reconstruction. LF has also been innovatively applied to iris and face recognition, identification of materials and fake pedestrians, acquisition of s, shape recovery, and LF microscopy. Here, we further summarize the existing problems and the development trends of LF imaging in , including the establishment and evaluation of the LF dataset, applications under high dynamic range (HDR) conditions, LF image enhancement, virtual reality, 3D display, and 3D movies, military optical camouflage technology, image recognition at micro-scale, image processing method based on HDR, and the optimal relationship between spatial resolution and four-dimensional (4D) LF information acquisition. LF imaging has achieved great success in various studies. Over the past 25 years, more than 180 publications have reported the capability of LF imaging in solving problems. We summarize these reports to make it easier for researchers to search the detailed methods for specific solutions.

Efficient Identification of water conveyance tunnels siltation based on ensemble deep learning

Xinbin WU; Junjie LI; Linlin WANG

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 5,   Pages 564-575 doi: 10.1007/s11709-022-0829-x

Abstract: The inspection of water conveyance tunnels plays an important role in water diversion projects. Siltation is an essential factor threatening the safety of water conveyance tunnels. Accurate and efficient identification of such siltation can reduce risks and enhance safety and reliability of these projects. The remotely operated vehicle (ROV) can detect such siltation. However, it needs to improve its intelligent recognition of image data it obtains. This paper introduces the idea of ensemble deep learning. Based on the VGG16 network, a compact convolutional neural network (CNN) is designed as a primary learner, called Silt-net, which is used to identify the siltation images. At the same time, the fully-connected network is applied as the meta-learner, and stacking ensemble learning is combined with the outputs of the primary classifiers to obtain satisfactory classification results. Finally, several evaluation metrics are used to measure the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results on the siltation dataset show that the classification accuracy of the proposed method reaches 97.2%, which is far better than the accuracy of other classifiers. Furthermore, the proposed method can weigh the accuracy and model complexity on a platform with limited computing resources.

Visual interactive image clustering: a target-independent approach for configuration optimization in machinevision measurement Research Article

Lvhan PAN, Guodao SUN, Baofeng CHANG, Wang XIA, Qi JIANG, Jingwei TANG, Ronghua LIANG

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2023, Volume 24, Issue 3,   Pages 355-372 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2200547

Abstract: (MVM) is an essential approach that measures the area or length of a target efficiently and non-destructively for product quality control. The result of MVM is determined by its configuration, especially the in image acquisition and the algorithmic in image processing. In a traditional workflow, engineers constantly adjust and verify the configuration for an acceptable result, which is time-consuming and significantly depends on expertise. To address these challenges, we propose a target-independent approach, , which facilitates configuration optimization by grouping images into different clusters to suggest lighting schemes with common parameters. Our approach has four steps: data preparation, data sampling, data processing, and visual analysis with our visualization system. During preparation, engineers design several candidate lighting schemes to acquire images and develop an algorithm to process images. Our approach samples engineer-defined parameters for each image and obtains results by executing the algorithm. The core of data processing is the explainable measurement of the relationships among images using the algorithmic parameters. Based on the image relationships, we develop VMExplorer, a visual analytics system that assists engineers in grouping images into clusters and exploring parameters. Finally, engineers can determine an appropriate lighting scheme with robust parameter combinations. To demonstrate the effectiveness and usability of our approach, we conduct a case study with engineers and obtain feedback from expert interviews.

Strategic Study of CAE 2008, Volume 10, Issue 3,   Pages 4-8

Abstract:

Through a study on materialist conception of history, it is indicated that engineering is a basic practical activity during humanity existence and development, and always a direct productivity at different historical periods. The engineering activity appeared before science activity. It is also believed that the knowledge and activity which relates to nature should be divided into three components of science, technology and engineering. The main characters of the science activity are "exploration"  and "discovery" , the main characters of the technology activity are "invention"  and " innovation" , and the main characters of the engineering activity are "integration"  and " construction" . From a point of view of modern knowledge, a related knowledge chain (knowledge network) exists among science-technology-engineering-industry. The relationship between engineering and industry is more direct and closes. The engineering is a practical activity of humanity for maintaining existence, multiplication and development, and constructing "homeland"  and "living"  well, and is also an embodiment of human wisdom and seeked "ideal" . From a point of view of philosophy, the result of the engineering activity usually embodies in constructing a new existence, i.e. an integrator of optimized construction under a certain boundary condition. Engineering integration contains various technical element integration, and also contains optimization-integration of technical element and basic elements of economics, society and management under a certain condition.Under a condition of new century, engineering is an important field of innovation activity, should be a new field of philosophy consideration. The transcendence of philosophy and engineering exists various "intermingling"  and "merging" . Therefore, engineering needs philosophy, and philosophy needs to face engineering. An interaction of engineering and philosophy is a feature raising in the Chinese engineering philosophy.
